One hand-carved wooden bullroarer decorated in pyrography with ancient symbols and runes relating to thunder and storm deities. Bullroarers are one of the most ancient and most widely used musical instruments and were known to be used in thunder storms to ward away lightning and to match the noise of the storm, as well as visibly replicating the wheel symbol so often associated with the sky, be it the fire of the sun or the fire of lightning. I am caring these in walnut, oak and cherry wood and am focusing on a more "pan-European" approach for something so primitive in my use of ancient pagan symbols, so am combining symbols from various spheres across Europe on both sides. These are finished with linseed oil to bring out the grain.
 
These come supplied with natural waxed thread that is thin and durable enough for the purpose. The waxed thread is the same as that used in leatherworking, and is cheap and easy to replace if worn out. The shapes of these are taken from traditional British bullroarer designs, but I chose to decorate them in my own way using various ancient pagan symbols appropriate for their use during storms. 
 
I am currently using oak, walnut and cherry to make these in two different designs, the small pointy design and the large rectangular design, both inspired by traditional British bullroarer shapes enhanced with these European designs focused on storm god symbols. Small bullroarers measure approximately 14cm long by 4.5 cm wide
